USA Today Supplemental Issue

I’m so excited to finally reveal the cover of the USA Today supplemental issue on plus size fashion that came out today.

I shot this weeks ago and have been dying  to tell someone, but of course everything was kept tightly under wraps.

Not to get all sentimental or anything, but this has been a huge moment for me. The other girls in the shoot, Laura Wells, Joanne Borgella, Lizzie Miller, Denise Bidot and Jennifer Maitland are big names in this industry and work constantly. They are all signed with major agencies and are all very recognizable.

I have to admit that when I was getting ready to shoot, I was nervous. Not because I don’t think I belong, necessarily, but because I knew I would be grappling with the thought that people didn’t THINK I belonged. I have a lot of odds stacked against me, and I am the only girl in the group not signed to one of the big three agencies.

But the experience was a great one. I loved working with the girls and there was a great, peaceful vibe on set. I tried to give my absolute best.

To be perfectly honest, the industries I work in have not been easy in any way. There is so much rejection that you simply cannot prepare yourself for. There’s not a day that goes by that someone doesn’t remind me that I’m either too fat, too small, too short, or too ethnic to fit in to what they think is the mold.

I remember around this time last year, the booker for a major agency told me that I was too short and too big to make it in this business.  She added that my face just wasn’t “striking” enough to compensate for those “shortcomings.” You can imagine what it did to me inside.

But I refuse to be broken.

The biggest and most important lesson that I have learned is that the jobs I do, and how I am perceived are not who I am. Modeling, reporting, writing, blogging etc – they do not define me and therefore I will not let the rejections dictate how I feel about myself. No one can define me but me and God. So even if the world told me I could not do something, you can bet your life I’m going to find a way if it’s what I want.

This year has held a lot of wonderful things for me – I’m taking control of my mind, spirit and health. And as a result, I’m taking my life and building it not on the promises of any person, but on the promises of God. I know what he has for me is for me and that there is not a soul on this earth who can stop that.

If you happen to be reading this, please don’t ever let someone tell you that you are not good enough to do the things you want to do.  They don't have the power, even if they like to think they do.

Please support this issue. You can buy it inside of USA Today papers in New York, Atlanta, Dallas and Chicago.

And thank you for reading and clicking on this blog. I love you all for it.
